Building Priorities: What to Upgrade and Why
A decision framework for choosing the next building instead of leveling the city like a row of matching garden hedges.
Learning Objectives
- Read keep prerequisites before starting long upgrades.
- Identify the building that removes the current bottleneck.
- Time large construction pushes with reward events.
Why This Matters
Every building adds power, but not every building adds usefulness. A city full of evenly leveled buildings can still be unable to unlock the next keep, increase march size, heal efficiently, or access needed research.
The best building to upgrade is usually the one that unlocks the next meaningful system or removes the limitation you are currently feeling. That may be the Keep, Academy, Rally Spot, troop building, Hospital, Holy Palace, Embassy, or a prerequisite that is not exciting but is standing in the doorway.
How Evony Actually Works
The Keep controls the maximum level of most city buildings and unlocks major systems. Each keep level has prerequisite buildings, and advanced buildings often have their own prerequisite chains.
Construction efficiency comes from four places working together: construction buffs, general duty officers, alliance help, and event timing. Speedups are the final ingredient, not the first.
Step-by-Step Walkthrough
- Open the Keep and inspect the requirements for the next level before choosing your next long build.
- Write down the full prerequisite chain, including secondary buildings that will otherwise surprise you halfway through the push.
- Upgrade the Academy and research construction technology early enough that the speed bonus applies to the expensive builds ahead.
- Keep the Rally Spot high because march size affects nearly every active part of the game.
- Keep the Hospital and Holy Palace appropriate to your troop risk. A player who participates in PvP needs a different healing and revival plan than a player who only joins monsters.
- Prepare resources, duty generals, buffs, alliance help, and event rewards before using large amounts of speedups.
- After the major unlock, pause and rebuild stockpiles instead of immediately starting another unplanned chain.
Optimization by Spending Style
Free-to-Play
Favor unlocks and compounding bonuses. Do not speed optional buildings merely to finish a power event tier that costs more than it returns.
Low Coiner
Use purchases to bridge the last portion of a planned construction event, not to begin a build you cannot otherwise support.
Heavy Coiner
Pre-build prerequisites and duty officers before a major keep push. Buying resources does not fix a missing prerequisite or poor construction buff.
Common Mistakes
- Starting the Keep without checking every prerequisite.
- Using universal speedups when construction speedups are available.
- Ignoring Rally Spot and Academy because they do not unlock a new troop tier immediately.
- Building troops during a keep push and draining the same resources needed for construction.
- Finishing upgrades outside events when waiting a day would produce additional rewards.
Elphi's Recommendations
Keep a written “next keep” checklist.
Treat construction speed as a permanent investment.
Do not confuse a building’s power increase with strategic value.
Quick Reference Checklist

- Duty general assigned
- Alliance help available
- Construction buff active
- Event timing checked
