Main and Assistant Generals Explained

Exactly what each general contributes, how to test a pairing, and where players accidentally spend permanent resources for no return.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the unequal roles of main and assistant generals.
  • Test skill compatibility in game before investing.
  • Choose which general deserves permanent development.

Why This Matters

The assistant system is one of Evony’s best tools and one of its most common traps. Two powerful generals do not automatically make a powerful pair. If their main skills conflict, the assistant may arrive wearing a very expensive expression and contribute far less than expected.

The main general is the permanent structure of the march. The assistant is the flexible support layer. That distinction should guide where gear, cultivation, ascension, and runestones go.

How Evony Actually Works

The main general supplies equipment, cultivation, ascension, skill books, specialties, and other applicable development. The assistant does not contribute equipped gear or cultivation in the same way.

When skills conflict, the game marks the inactive effect. Compatibility must be checked with the actual pair and skill books because wording that looks different can still occupy the same effect family.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Place the intended main and assistant together before adding expensive skill books.
  2. Open the assistant skill display and verify that the main skill remains active.
  3. Add planned skill books one at a time, checking after each addition for conflicts.
  4. Confirm that conditions match the march. An “attacking” bonus is not the same as a broad “marching” bonus, and a monster bonus does nothing in PvP.
  5. Invest gear, cultivation, ascension, and the most valuable runestones into the main first.
  6. Keep assistants flexible when possible so they can be replaced as the roster improves.

Optimization by Spending Style

Free-to-Play

Use accessible assistants with strong compatible base skills and useful early specialties. Do not chase a premium assistant that prevents awakening the main.

Low Coiner

Spend on a premium assistant only when the pair is a long-term upgrade and the main is already well supported.

Heavy Coiner

Test every new release against the actual pair. Marketing language is not a compatibility check.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming both generals contribute gear.
  • Cultivating the assistant as if it were the main.
  • Installing all skill books at once and then discovering a conflict.
  • Ignoring attack versus march versus rally conditions.
  • Replacing a working pair for a tiny theoretical gain that costs months of development.

Elphi's Recommendations

Main gets permanent investment.

Assistant must be compatible, not merely powerful.

Test every skill change in game.

Quick Reference Checklist

  • Main selected
  • Assistant skill active
  • Skill books tested one at a time
  • Conditions match march role
  • Permanent investment assigned correctly
